A grandmother’s First Communion photograph, a 1970s portrait of parents or the only print from a seaside holiday become files after scanning, but not all files protect memories in the same way. People who want to keep as much information as possible from the original photograph choose TIFF for a family archive, especially when pictures will be retouched, printed or passed to later generations.
TIFF is not automatically the best choice for every photograph and every home folder. It takes more space, copies more slowly and is not always convenient to open on a phone. It is worth understanding what it actually gives and when to combine it with practical JPG.
What is a TIFF file, exactly?
TIFF, or Tagged Image File Format, was designed for high image quality and archival work. Unlike standard JPG it can save a photograph without the losses that come from compression. That means that when the file is opened and saved again, fine tonal transitions, paper texture and facial details do not disappear.
That matters especially with old prints. On a 1950s photograph a small scratch may run through an eye, and on a faded picture of a family celebration details of a dress, a suit or the background fade. A good TIFF scan keeps more material for later, careful restoration. A retoucher can work on a digital copy without touching the only paper original.
A TIFF file can also contain greater colour depth, for example 16 bits per channel instead of the typical 8 bits. That does not mean every old photograph will suddenly show details that were never there. It does, however, give more reserve when correcting colour casts, lifting shadows and restoring natural tones without visible colour banding.
TIFF for a family archive — the main benefits
The most important advantage of TIFF is fidelity to the scan. If the print is of good quality, was scanned at a suitable resolution and was not subjected to aggressive compression, the file can become a digital counterpart of the original — one from which further versions can be prepared safely.
That is an especially reasonable solution when you plan restoration. Removing dust, scratches, stains and creases needs work on a file that contains as much data as possible. The same applies to historically credible colourisation of a black-and-white portrait. A TIFF source file lets you keep the original scan and the processed version separately, instead of overwriting one copy.
TIFF also works when photographs are to return to paper. Family pictures often later go into an album, a frame, a gift for parents or a larger print. High-quality JPG can also give a very good result, but TIFF provides a greater safety margin when a file is professionally prepared for print.
Predictability also matters in an archive. TIFF has been used for years in photography, printing and digitisation of collections. It is not a fashionable format that appeared briefly with one app. It is a mature standard, read by many programs and systems, so it fits material you do not want to lose in five or ten years.
What does TIFF have to do with DPI?
File format and scanning resolution are two different things, though both affect the final result. DPI describes how much information the scanner reads from the print. TIFF describes how that information is saved.
Scanning photographs at 600 DPI usually gives a good reserve for keeping standard prints and making moderate enlargements. 1200 DPI makes sense for small photographs, very fine details or when you expect a larger print or more precise restoration. Do not assume that raising DPI alone will repair an unsharp, camera-shaken or badly damaged photograph. A scanner can record what is on the print, but it will not create authentic details the original does not contain.
The best result comes from a reasonable combination of parameters: a clean, carefully made scan at a suitable resolution and a format that keeps its quality. That is why a TIFF file is often treated as a master copy from which more convenient versions are later prepared.
TIFF or JPG? You do not have to choose only one
JPG has a huge practical advantage: it is small. It is easy to send to the family, put in a phone gallery, email or display on a digital frame. For everyday viewing of memories it is a very convenient format.
Its limitation is compression. When JPG is saved, some image data is simplified, and each further strong edit and save can lower quality. For one photograph viewed only on a screen the difference may be invisible. For a photograph meant for restoration, repeated corrections or printing the difference becomes more important.
The most reasonable model for many families looks like this: TIFF serves as a digital archival original, and JPG as a working copy. The first is stored safely and not edited by accident. The second can be shared freely, cropped for a frame or sent to relatives. That way you do not have to give up either quality or convenience.
Expect larger file sizes
You pay for TIFF’s high quality with disk space. One file can take from a dozen to even several hundred megabytes, depending on print dimensions, DPI, colour depth and how it is saved. With an album of several hundred or several thousand photographs the size of the whole archive grows quickly.
That is not an argument against TIFF, but a reason to plan storage from the start. An external drive, a second medium kept in another place and a safe online space give much better protection than a single USB stick in a drawer. A stick can be useful for handing files over, but as the only place for family history it is too risky.
Clear folder names also help. Instead of random files such as “SCAN_00458”, use a layout based on years, people and events, for example “1978_Ania_christening” or “Grandparents_album_1960s”. Years later that organisation saves a lot of time, especially when someone in the family who does not know the story of every photograph takes over the archive.
How to prepare a TIFF archive safely
Before scanning, do not wipe old prints with a wet cloth yourself or try to force cracked photographs flat. Photographic paper can be brittle, and the image layer prone to further damage. It is enough to separate photographs gently from loose sheets, describe groups of material and protect them against creasing during transport.
After receiving files, make at least two extra copies at once. One can stay on a home drive, another on a separate medium or in a protected storage service. If the family lives in different cities, pass one copy to a trusted person. Fire, flooding or a computer failure should not mean the loss of a whole history.
A good practice is also to keep both the file before retouching and the restored version. A cleaned photograph may be more beautiful and easier to receive, but the source scan documents the original’s condition. Both versions have value: one emotional and practical, the other archival.
When will TIFF not be needed?
If you have a few photographs to show in a digital frame, send to siblings or make a small set of reprints, high-quality JPG may be fully sufficient. The same applies when small file size and easy use on a phone are the priority.
Choose TIFF mainly for the most valuable photographs, hard to replace and needing care: old portraits, damaged pictures, prints meant for restoration and material you want to keep as a family source for the future.
